19-Year-Old Faces Felony Charges for Selling Vote
by Andrew
A nineteen year old in Edina MN is facing felony charges stemming from an eBay listing for his right to vote in the upcoming presidential election. Max Sanders posted his vote on eBay on May 28. Though the Star Tribune reported that the listing garnered little attention from buyers, the Minnesota Secretary of State is ready to invoke a 1893 law that makes it legal to buy or sell your vote.
Sanders offered photographic proof that he voted for the winner bidder’s candidate in the November election. He claims the listing was a joke. The truth is, he was probably just trying to make an extra buck as just about anything seems to be for sale on eBay these days.
If the felony charges proceed, Sanders could receive up to 5 years in prison or a $10,000 fine. The fine? Okay, maybe that teaches him a civic lesson. But is jail time really necessary? Hopefully, Hennepin County, which is bringing the charges against him, will drop the charges with a stern slap on the wrist.
