To Jason Varitek, I Loved You First…
by Jeremy
…but Andrew beat me to the punch.
I didn’t watch baseball for years. In fact, I think the last time I watched baseball, other than one or two games at the park when a friend had an extra ticket, was the ‘86 World Series. But no need to go into that. In 2003, I got caught up in the hype when the Sox had a run at the American League championship and I’ve watched much more regularly ever since. But you want to know a secret? It was really Jason Varitek, the catcher, that got me watching and keeps me watching. Oh yeah, I have a big ol’ gay crush on Jason Varitek.
Let’s face it: dude is a major hottie. I’m not sure I know anyone who disagrees on that point, at least not anyone who is a straight woman or gay man. He’s got a nice looking body, a very attractive face, and I like a man who can carry off a beard or goatee without looking like a tool. I’ve never met Tek, but all the media reports I’ve seen make him out to be friendlier than your average big name player and I know he does good charity work. He’s a dad to three young kids, which just makes him that much more attractive in my book. As Red Sox team captain, he has a reputation as the heart and soul of one of the best teams in major league baseball. For all these reasons, I like to call him my secret husband. It’s so secret, though, that even he doesn’t know.
Sadly, though, I suspect he’s about to be the next celebrity to be crucified in the media, in New England if not nationally. A piece on boston.com yesterday announced that Tek has filed for divorce from his wife Karen. As of this morning, he is already the top “recommended search” on that site, meaning this is a hot story that everyone wants to know about. If everyone wants to know about it, the media are going to dig that much harder to see what they can find in the trash to sensationalize the story. I, for one, don’t believe he deserves it.
So, to keep it short, I have a message for Tek: this is a tough time and if you need some consolation and support, you know where to find it! Okay, yeah, yeah, I know he’s not gay, but a man can dream, can’t he?
Check out this cool fan site for Tek!
