Almost American Idol Katharine McPhee recorded a spare version of Paula Cole’s Me from the album This Fire. The performance, which is part of the Pepsi Smash series, is streaming on Yahoo!
McPhee’s voice carries the material alright, but the arrangement of the song is horrible. There’s no attempt to capture the melody of the original, the keyboards are practically silent on the recording and the guitar player seems to be stringing together random chords.
The video has screens showing Paula Cole herself performing the background, and the overall presentation is disturbing.
