University of California Looks at Revising Admissions Standards for Residents
by Andrew
Under the proposed changes to its admissions policy, the University of California system would, beginning in 2012, reserve spots at its nine campuses for the top 9 percent of the senior classes in the state. The change is an increase from 4 percent that is now guaranteed a spot in the school system. The state university system had previously accepted any student who met the minimum admissions criteria for the year of application, though students may not be accepted to their first choice UC campus.
The change would allow the admissions system to accept students who would not meet the eligibility requirements otherwise, but could demonstrate potential to succeed in college. The current requirements boil down to SAT score, grade point average and specific course selection. Students who failed to satisfy one of the three requirements could still be considered by individual campuses based on additional information in their educational background. Under the current system, those same students would be denied automatic admissions.
A final decision on the proposal is expected by the end of 2008.
