Cuil Challenges Google in the Search Engine Market
by Andrew
A new search engine, called Cuil (cool, if you will) aims to do what Google does better than Google. The search engine, which debuted this week, relies on contextual analysis to pull of web results and claims to do it faster than Google can. Cuil claims to ignore traffic patterns that Google uses in its algorithm, which tends to favor sites that are already popular. Instead, the new search engine takes into account context of sites and user search patterns to generate results.
Cuil claims to be faster because of a larger index of pages, though whether that claim will make a difference to the average user remains doubtful. The site also claims to not collect or retain personal data of its users, something that Google uses to customize delivery of all its products.
The search engine is currently, but temporarily, ad free and in English. Plans to expand to additional languages are in the works.
Initial user testing by smartremarxcom brought mixed results. The site stalled in displaying search results. It found 1,366 pages for the search “smart remarx” but the results themselves failed to load for about 1 minute. The results prioritized Smart ReMarx News (the pre-relaunch news site) above inbound links to SmartReMarxcom and additional results seemed to be in no particular order of relevance.
The format of the search results are messy. The listing truncates the full title of the referent website and then below lists the first text content of the site in a paragraph format. The problem, of course, is that it picks up sidebar content, categories and archive links, which gives little information about the content of the site itself. It also failed to identify any pages from the Features site or the relaunched SmartReMarxcom.
Cuil is a newborn, likely the company is still assessing performance and functional issues and those will be improved upon.
