Salk Institute Finds Mice Lose Weight on Pill
by Andrew
Scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, CA have identified a drug that, in laboratory studies, can simulate exercise without the exercise. The tests have so far been done only on mice, but there is at least some evidence that the pill, dubbed AICAR, boosts energy in the body and forces it to burn calories. There were also results to suggest that those mice that did exercise on the pill saw improved results over those poor pill-less bastards.
Of course, there’s no word on whether the results could be reproduced in humans, but the applications are endless.
- Doritos could offer a pill in every bag of chips, so their customers could work off some of those hard-earned calories by popping the pill.
Virgin Galactic will offer the pill as part of a pre-launch regiment to increase the endurance of its tourist space travelers.
Athletes could take the pill during their work-out routine in order to skip their aerobic training and have more time to admire themselves in the mirror.
Super models could take them…just because. It’s just one more pill. It’s not like they know what the other 6 are for.
Researchers caution that strength training should still be part of any exercise routine as the pill would only be a substitute for aerobic exercise. Still, the new pill, once released up on the public, might just challenge our notion that exercise and diet are the keys to a healthy lifestyle.
